We started from Holbav, a little village close to Brașov, with a hike through a huge snow, partly through the forest. Above, an amazing view over a part of Poiana Mărului commune, houses scattered on the countless hills, like in a fairy tale! Marian and Charlie, true professionals, passionate about mountains and human interaction, made our day a really special one! I wholeheartedly recommend for an unforgettable experience, in one of the countless wonders of Transylvania!

One memorable experience!
We were lucky from the beginning and the weather really played in our favor as we had such a lovely day: no wind, only clear skies and 100% visibility.
It was a completely exhilarating day where you can easily spend hours taking in the breeze, walking the trails, taking photos, and getting a nice picnic.
One highlight was visiting a sheepfold, and being able to see where the real cheese is made!
The views are simply breathtaking and the walking trails are great, all topped off by being able to identify the wildlife tracks in the snow. Also there were many interesting flowers and plants to observe.
The views in all directions are breathtaking & extraordinary. There are numerous pathways to explore each leading to a great photo opportunity.
Walking around the mountain will give you amazing views on mountains or landscapes as: Piatra Craiului, Bucegi , Iezer - Papusa, Poiana Marului etc
We had a wonderful time with incredible and skillful guides: always positive, professional with huge respect of mountain etiquette and great nature lovers. These guys encourage the sustainable travel and promotes the responsible tourism…how not to love them ?!
From my point of view , this trip can be quite a strenuous climb for beginners and novices in some places. It is not a technical or dangerous hike, but is fairly intense as it takes about 7 to 8 hours.
You should have proper equipment if you want to fully enjoy the experience. Definitely wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes.
Also remember to take plenty of drinks and snacks ( there are no bins, so carry a bag with you to dispose the refuse ).
As a suggestion: don’t forget to have your sun protection with you and re-apply from time to time, mountain tan is the best when is safe….and you are not on the red side of the wheel color :)
Another advice: this area is also known for bears, so do not go alone….and follow the guides!

Yes, they are still doing tours in the pandemic and the sites are open! Not all restaurants are open but Bran Castle has hardly any tourists. Great time to go. Rasnov is available to see from the outside during renovations but the inside is not. I didn't feel like I missed that much there. Tiberiu (TB) led my tour and when I mentioned that I wanted to learn more about Romania history TB lit up. He is such a nice person and shared all of what he knew about Romanian history, to include the sites we visited and then more, and also talked about the local food and how hard COVID has been on the country. I really enjoyed his company and would count this as the best experience I had in 5 days in Romania. Thanks TB!

Tiberiu Simon our tour guide was fantastic. He gave us in depth information while driving around as well as both sites we visited. Provided comfort and laughter the whole time. Also took us to a great restaurant afterwards as an added treat. I highly recommend booking with him!!!

I had my first hiking experience with their help. We have visited a place near Brașov that took my breath away. They made me feel like I was part of the team and made everything feel super easy. I was a bit scared about snakes and bears but I knew I'll be protected in case of anything. This is the first day after the experience but I already look for the following one. They are professional, super friendly and, most of all, interesting people from which you feel that you can learn a lot of things. I truly appreciate and recommend them.

Was amazing! I booked a tour alone. Was just me and the guide and he was amazing. As a alone traveller sometimes people don’t treat me nicely since I’m alone. But this company was super nice and open for me. My guide, Tibi, was super friendly and teach a lot of stuff about Romanian. Plus the place is beautiful! I highly recommend this company and also recommend that you a stay more days in Brasov and maybe do another tours. (I didn’t but I wish I could do that). Bran castle is beautiful. Totally worth! Thank you guys for the lovely day

I like the approach and high level of the services that Active travel provides. They helped to choose the most suitable tour for me, to buy proper tracking shoes :), i guide Mihai came on time to pick me up, he is friendly and very experienced. He aslo was attentive to covid restictions and was wearing mask inside the car.
We did very nice hike, during it Mihai told some legends and made introduction to the history of Romania. I enjoyed.

Marian, our guide, was very polite and gave us useful information about the surroundings and how we should behave on the mountain in certain difficult situations. We took one day trip to Rasnov and Bran Castle the guide Mr Tiberiu Simon was extremely helpful and made the trip an unforgettable one. Flexible in pick up locations, extremely knowledgeable about the history of the sites and said it like a story and attracted our attentions to every single detail. I booked 2 tours with Active Travel during June 2021 after the pandemic and could not be happier. From the attention I received when contacting the operator by whatsapp I knew I was in good hands. One of the most important elements when booking a tour is the guide. My guide was Tiberiu and he did an amazing job.I was just expecting a normal tour but got immersed into the lives and day a day of medieval Romanians by his expertise in such a way that the tour was much more than that: it was an experience that made me learn quite a lot and understand many things for example in Sibiu I got to learn the importance of guilds to the city, and in Rasnov I learnt lots of war tactics for defending a fortress; finally in Bran Castle I understood how the legend of Dracula came to be after a series of historical coincidences and how Bran castle has so much more history and how this castle is something real with centuries of historical events and not made to attract tourists just for vampire hunting. I think one of the main reasons I enjoyed Transylvania was my experience with Active Travel.

Our trip was very pleasant, we had priority at the entrances of Peles and Bran Castle. Our guide Karoly was really kind and competent and a stunning English speaker. He took his time to explain in detail aspects of the not so well known (for us, Italians) history of modern Romania. I absolutely recommend a trip with Active Travel!

We had a great time during our bear-watching experience!! Alex was a great guide! He knew a lot about the environment and of course about the bears themselves. He treated nature and the living space of the bears with a lot of respect. During the Covid period, we (my girlfriend and I) were the only ones joining the tour. So that was really nice. Eventually we saw two beautiful male brown bears. One was even a few meters away. (sorry i used your photo:)) It was great!! We would definitely recommend this trip!! Thanks Alex!

I had the chance to spend a week in the Rasnov-Brasov area and wanted to organize a week of day-trip hikes through Piatra Craiului, Bucegi, and some traditional villages. I contacted several operators, but Marian from Active Travel was extremely responsive and accommodating, and he tailored a great itinerary for me. He assessed my previous experience to know what itineraries would be most suitable, and on the meeting day he checked the equipment to make sure I was appropriately equipped for the hikes. The hikes are very well priced, with pick-up and drop off included.
I had the pleasure to hike with Marian himself for a few days and with Mihai for two days as well. Both of them are certified mountain guides with great experience and know these mountain trails inside out. It was a pleasure to spend my time hiking with them, learning from their experience, and exchanging fun travel stories. They know most locals in the mountain villages and this adds to the experience as well.
This hike in Piatra Craiului is very beautiful, and we managed to make it all the way to the Piatra Mica ridge which I thought would be too steep for my liking, but with Marian's encouragement and good advice we managed to cross without any issues or concerns. I felt safe on the trails at all times.
I would highly recommend Active Travel and their itineraries to anyone looking for a great hiking experience in the area (and not only). I already planned my next hikes!

Wir konnten in den knapp 2,5 Stunden die wir in der Versteckhütte verbrachten, 3 Bären aus nächster Nähe(~20-30m entfernt) sehen.
Laut unserem kompetenten Guide Alex handelte es sich um 3 Braunbären zwischen 4-8 Jahren.
Alex konnte uns einiges über die Bären erzählen.
Der Weg zum Versteck dauert etwa 10min zu Fuß.Schon hier konnten wir deutlich Bärenspuren erkennen.
Wir waren noch nicht mal richtig in der Hütte,als schon der erste Bär auftauchte.
Für den Fall der Fälle hatte unser Guide, sowie auch wir ein Pfefferspray dabei.
Wir fühlten uns jedoch zu jederzeit sehr sicher.
Insgesamt waren wir inklusive Guide eine sehr überschaubare Gruppe von 4 Personen.
Die Bären bekommen am Futterplatz eine etwa 20%ige Menge ihres Tagesbedarfs an Obst,Ceralien und auch Honig.
Treffpunkt und Zeitpunkt werden nach der Buchung per Email mitgeteilt.
Bei uns war es Brasov Zentrum, wo Alex mit einem Pickup bereits auf uns wartete.
Bei der Rückfahrt baten wir ihn, am Parkplatz abzusetzen, wo wir unser Auto geparkt hatten, was für ihn kein Problem war.
Alles in allem sehr gut investierte 45€ p.P. und ein unvergessliches Erlebnis!

Tiberiu Simon gave an excellent tour! He was very knowledgeable on not just the casltles but the city and local area history. He was very accommodating with providing extra rain jackets during an unexpected rain. He went out of his way to make the tour feel special for me and my kids and spent some time showing us around the local market which he did not have to do. I highly recommend him as a tour guide!

Спасибо Вам огромное Тибериу, за прекрасные виды, интересную беседу и исторические познания о древней и современной Румынии! Успели проехать и замок Бран и крепость Рышнов (которые были по пути, хотя в план не входили), а также проехали вокруг старого Брашова, опять таки по инициативе нашего гида!
Возможность увидеть медведей аж 3 раза, была вишенкой на торте! Если вашим гидом будет Тибериу считайте что ваша экскурсия пройдет отлично!

Despite the fact that we signed up at the very last minute, Marian was very helpful and professional with us. With his guidance, we hiked all the way up to the peak of the "Piatra Mica" on the Piatra Craiului mountain - it was the most memorable activity of our trip! He was very knowledgeable of the city, villages and especially the mountain you're hiking on.
If you're thinking of exploring the nearby mountains of Brasov, I definitely encourage you to go on at least one hike with him (or any of his other guides). You will have an experience you will remember forever!

"My boyfriend (a first timer hiker) and I had a wonderful hike with Activetravel and our guide Mihai. He was really good at adapting the tour along to way to our abilities and wishes, and both my boyfriend and I got an experience for life hiking Piatra Mică. He was also easy to talk with especially about nature, hiking and Romania in general, and is a very experienced climber and hiker - so you are safe in his hands. The tour itself can be somewhat adapted to your skills and abilities, and the first part of the way from Zarnesti Gorge to Curmătura Chalet is manageable for families and children. However, it is recommended to have good footwear and have a basis of physical form, both if you wish to go further up the mountain (there's gravel, rocks, possibility of actual climbing) and for the way down, which is strenuous and you are better of with at a good foothold. The nature along the way is simply gorgeous, and you'll get to see farm animals and possibly birds or other wild animals along the way together with streams, flowers and fantastic views. All in all: if you wish to experience Romanian mountains Piatra Crailului National Park is the place to go, and with a guide you are both safe and will experience the national park in ways you'd never be able to, unless you are a local who have fared the park for years."

This trip is really great! Marian was extremly flexible and adjusted the route to the weather and our wishes and needs. We learned a lot about the nature and history of this beautiful country from him and the planning and accomodation was excellent. Besides of this, he is a really nice guy.
The nature varies a lot and you will enjoy forest, meadows, saddels, canyons, dramatic ridges and magnificient views. It is really wild nature and most of the time we were actually alone.

Our tour was beautiful, perfectly highlights the amazing Romanian countryside, our guides were awesome, very polite & with a treasure trove of knowledge and experience on the landscapes around and the fauna of the areas visited. I enjoyed the forest fruits, the greenery all around, the superb views and the lovely company.
The hike was very difficult for me in particular due to standing medical issues but the guides were very supportive figuratively & literally throughout the hike.

"Wonderful experience! We saw a female bear and her 3 cubs, later on a male bear. Also 2 foxes strolling around. One hour drive out of Brasov, then short walk to a secure hide to wait and watch the bears in their natural habitat. Good shoes needed. Our guide Alex was very helpful, super friendly, had good informations for us. I definitely recommend it!"

I cannot express enough praise about this guided tour with beautiful views all around. Our guide, Mihai, was very accommodating and great company throughout the day. He explained the architecture of buildings along our drive to Magura. From there he took us through the wonderful village and effortlessly explained the history of the landscape and daily life of the nearby villages. A “must-have” tour if you are interested in Romanian countryside, history, and some hiking!

Had such a great day exploring Peles Castle, Bran Castle, and Rasnov Fortress with Charlie! He was so knowledgeable about the history of each place and of Transylvania and Brasov in general. He knew all the best photo spots and let us make stops in between if we saw something interesting. I was traveling solo and it was great to have a guide and a few other travelers to spend the day with, I don't think I would have had as good of an experience if I tried to do this on my own. I can tell you one thing – this hike was a highlight of my year. I booked this hiking trip just for myself alone, but it felt like hiking with a friend. Marian is the calmest person on this planet. While I was struggling for the 80% of the climbing up, he continued to encourage me till we got back to the car. Despite the fact that snails were going faster than me, Marian stayed right next to me. Because of his huge experience, he sees your limits, he knows where and when to push you out of your comfort zone. For me it was not a walk in the park. It took a lot out of me, but, oh my God, the view and nature! Even if we did not reach the highest point, the views I’ve seen were mind-blowing. Do you know the iconic opening scene from “The Sounds of Music” where Julie Andrews sings “The hills are alive with a sound of music”? It felt just like that. So, if you are not sure about booking the hike – do it. You will not regret it! I can absolutely agree with a saying that in every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks. Thank you, Marian, for this life changing experience. I'm sure we will meet once again! It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves!

We usually prefer to travel on our own without a guide, but sometimes it’s worth it to hire a local to show you around; this was one of those times. Marian took us on an invigorating hike with gorgeous views that photos do not do justice! It was just us two, and we are avid hikers, so he was able to take us on a longer hike as per our request. It was physically demanding but not too difficult or dangerous, and every few minutes the views of the Carpathian Mountains and the rolling countryside hills just got more and more breath-taking. After maybe 3 hours in the mountains, we descended into a quaint village in the valley, passing grazing cattle and sheep and smelling bonfires in the distance. We felt so refreshed and alive to be in such a location after 3 days touring cities. We ate lunch there at a guest house, and he was able to arrange our family-style lunch to be all vegetarian, and it was very hearty and filling and all locally produced! To finish, we had a long but easy (2 hours, relatively flat) walk back along country roads, and Marian told us about how his tours are designed to be eco-friendly and give back to the local villages, which we definitely appreciate. Afterwards, we were pretty tired but so grateful we had booked this hiking tour with him; we never would have been able to do such a hike or have such an immersive and authentic experience in the country on our own. It was the by far the best day of our trip.

First of all let me tell you how AMAZINGLY PROFESSIONAL this company is! Its my 1st time in Brasov Romania and i wanted to see Dracule’s Castle on Halloween (Bran Castle) I booked with this company and they IMMEDIATELY responded telling me what to do what to expect and they even picked me up ON TIME! I’m a Doctor so BEING ON TIME is very important to me. And they ALSO took EXCELLENT COVID safety measures, the Guide wore his mask the whole time. And THE BEST WAS the Guide, Tudor G. !!!!! First of all COOL FIRST NAME and the guy is EVEN COOLER!!! He's 31 (looks 21) and SUPER INTELLIGENT AND WAY WAY NICE!!! The HONEST kind of nice too! When you book with this company DEMAND TUDOR G. FOR YOUR GUIDE!! You WILL NOT be disappointed! His knowledge of his land is AMAZING! He wants to be a Hollywood actor one day, with his charisma i BET IT WILL happen!!!! This may not have been the exact tour we took but it was pretty close. This was the first of three tour that my wife and I took during our honeymoon/anniversary in Brasov. We were primarily led by Tudor, who was assisted by Mihai.
Mihai was the principal "outdoors" guide and had extensive experience with wilderness adventure and photography. This was primarily leisure for us though.
Tudor stopped briefly at the base of Bran Castle on the way to the mountain villages for us to take pictures. On the drive, he explained the history of the Saxon villages and their unique architecture. Once in the mountains, he deferred to Mihai, but it was clear that Tudor was working hard to learn and already had a great deal to contribute. They got us into a bat cave filled with bats and then led us up a lengthy walk into the hills/mountains. The views were breath taking, though honestly, we enjoyed spending time with two proud, intelligent, and passionate Romanians of different generations. They taught us a great deal about their culture and history and were great companions for the day.
The walk was a bit long but we were also tired from several days of travel. It wasn't rugged nor particularly grueling, though it is a few miles and much of it was uphill. They were very accommodating as we fatigued and made a great day out of it. We ended with an authentic lunch at a private restaurant that overlooked the mountains. It was a truly once in a lifetime experience.
I'd recommend this tour for anyone hoping to see the Romanian countryside but not looking for a truly wilderness experience of hiking, biking, or wildlife stalking. Bring water, decent shoes, a hat, and a good camera and you'll have a day you'll remember forever.

We started our trip with a walking tour of the Romanian countryside
When we returned to Brasov that afternoon we kept our appointment with Tudor to walk the historic city center of Brasov. Between sites, we learned a great deal about present day Brasov and Romania. Brasov is very much a 21st century city with a 15th century vibe and Tudor was able to unite both worlds with his passion for history and his home city. It was clear that Brasov's best days are still ahead.
After a good night's sleep, Tudor picked us up again for Bran Castle and Peles Palace. This day could have been longer but we kept it to these two sites and he really made the most of it. This was one of the best moments to have a professional guide. On a busy day, the lines can be very long but Tudor was able to get tickets quickly. He could professionally lead the tours through the sites unaided and answer even complex historical, ethnographical, and geographic questions. He also knew where all the bathrooms were. Finally, he would often just hold our place in long entry lines so that we could freely explore the grounds rather than waiting.
Active Travel has been affordable, accommodating, and indispensable. As Americans we were required to test for COVID before flying home. Tudor found us an English language testing site one block from our hotel and made our appointment. He, and his company, are worthy ambassadors for Romania and ensure that we will return.

I did this hike with Mihai, our guide, and 4 friends at the end of October, and it was spectacular. The fall colours were incredible, and Mihai showed us some very challenging routes that led to the most spectacular vistas I've ever seen. There were very few other people around, and at times it felt like we had the mountain to ourselves. Would highly recommend!

I would have missed so much of the history of this beautiful castle and region without this organized tour. Our guide was safe with Covid precautions and a great driver. I was hesitant about this tour at first but so glad I booked it. It was my favourite tour in Romania!! Sighisoara and viscri are not to be missed. My guide Charlie was very knowledgeable and we had lots of laughs along the way. He gave plenty of time for photos and stopped in some very strategic areas that allowed for beautiful views and photos. I never felt rushed as we went at a comfortable pace. I highly recommend this tour to see and learn about the Transylvania area.

My partner and I were in Romania for a wedding and I really wanted to include Transylvania in our quick tour of the country. I found this tour group on the web. From the moment I contacted them they were so obliging and helpful. We actually got a private tour starting from Bacau instead of Bucharest so we didn't have to worry about driving. We had a wonderful no stress 3 day/2 night tour of Transylvania
The communication with the owner Marian was amazing from day one, the booking process was easy and he tailored the whole tour to an amazing amount of detail and catering to our needs.
Our guide Tiberiu picked us up from Bacau driving us into Transylvania. His knowledge on his country was wonderful and we saw some amazing fortified churches, citidaels and castles. the accommodation chosen for us was very comfortable and clean.
Tiberiu even modified the trip to show us extra parts of the country, sharing the amazing foods and palinka with us. We hiked in some beautiful scenery and foraged in the wild sampling plums, apples, walnuts and mushrooms.
We came back from this trip revitalized and feeling back to being yourself after living with the pandemic. We will definitely be back to this wonderful part of the world its so much better than I could have ever dreamt. Our guide really showed us some most amazing sites, scenery, tastes and smells and you could really feel the passion he had for his country.
I can't rate this tour higher.

It was a superb hike. Mihai was our guide and he told us many interesting stories while hiking. We had a nice stop at the chalet and eat something and then Mihai changed the plan and we conquered the Piatra Mica and this was an amazing hike. The view at the top was amazing and worth any struggle on the way! We highly recommend Mihai and Active Travel from Marian!

From the minute we landed in Bucarest to the minute we left the driver back in Bucarest, everything was perfect.
The hotel was amazing and the location was great, Marien was always available for our questions no matter when we called him, the tracks were amazing - Beautiful and at the exact level of our experience of fitness and navigation.
Even when we wanted advice and help with things not related to our trip Merian was so happy to help us.
This was the perfect choice for our honeymoon and we are so happy we did it with him.

I didn't think that a 4-hour guided tour from the Pestera Village to the Joaca and La Table saddles could be so beautiful! The road, the landscapes, the discovery of the wilderness is truly an unforgettable experience. But the most interesting experience is the interaction with Marian! Not with the cheerful guide, full of knowledge, stories and legends of the places but with the man Marian, friendly who conquers you immediately. I warmly recommend this double experience and I will be back soon!
