RASNOV FORTRESS IS CLOSED, for the moment! Anyhow, we could visit the outside walls and exterior court.
Designed to delight those fascinated by the Gothic legends of Transylvania, this approx. 10-hour tour takes you to the heart of the mysterious Romanian region. After hotel pickup in Brasov, we drive to Sinaia to visit Peles Castle, a striking example of Neo-Renaissance architecture, than tick off top attractions such as the dramatic Rasnov Fortress and Bran’s Castle, whose Gothic turrets and hilltop perch have earned it the nickname of ‘Dracula’s Castle’. Peles surprises not only with its exterior beauty but with its intricate interior and attention to detail. Built to serve as a summer residence for Romania's first monarch Carol the First it is a combination of style, beauty and ravelled wood carvings. Peles castle is the first castle in Europe to have electrical power and was equipped with an electrical elevator, running hot and cold water, central heating and vacuum cleaner. Our knowledgeable guides will take you through the magnificent rooms of the castle and highlight you the details and unknown secrets. Our second stop will be in Bran castle, also known as ‘Dracula’s Castle’ — a hilltop estate that conjures up visions of howling wolves and bats fluttering in the moonlight. Wander the castle’s Gothic chambers and learn about its ties to Bram Stoker’s undead antihero, inspired by Vlad the Impaler a harsh, but rightful ruler. Initially built by teutonic knights and reconstructed as a stone building by the orders of Ludvig de Anjou it protected the south-eastern border of Transylvania with Wallachia. Not only used as a military fort but also as customs building where merchants paied their taxes before entering to Transylvania. Strategically built on a rock, called Dietrich rock offered a great outlook on the trade rout passing through. After the Great Unification of Transylvania with the rest of Romania the castle's tale took a turn and became the favorite summer residence of Queen Maria, the Queen of all Romanians and one of the keymaker of the Greater Romania. Accompanied by our guide you'll not only learn about the castle's history but also get introduction in the numerous tales and legends which inspired Bram Stoker in creating its successful novel Dracula. Next up is Rasnov fortress, known also as a peasant castle and it was used by the inhabitants of Rasnov (Rosenau) as shelter during the numerous invasions marching through. The fortress included dwellings where the villagers could accommodate themselves and be protected by thick walls equiped with shooting and pouring holes. Not only that the community thought of their food resources, but they where ambitious enough to dig a very deep well to ensure they had water inside the fortress. Our guide will happilly tell you the tales and legends while taking in the beautiful views which surround the fortress.

Crowded in high season (July - August).
Will I still get value from the tour if Rasnov Fortress is closed and I can only see the exterior?
Absolutely! We understand that visiting a historical site is important, and even if Rasnov Fortress is closed for interior visits, its exterior offers breathtaking views and a wealth of fascinating history. Our guide will share compelling stories about the fortress's strategic importance, its role in local defense, and the legends surrounding it. The beautiful scenery and the chance for memorable photos make this stop truly worthwhile.
Why are entrance fees not included in the tour price? Are there any other hidden costs?
We recognize that flexibility is important for our guests. That is why we separate entrance fees from the tour price. Some may have their own discounted tickets or prefer to skip certain attractions. This approach allows you to pay only for what you genuinely wish to experience. We assure you there are no hidden costs; we clearly outline all additional expenses, such as entrance fees and optional drop-offs, so you know exactly what to expect.
How crowded does Bran Castle get, especially in high season? Will it ruin my experience?
We understand that a crowded space can sometimes detract from your enjoyment. Bran Castle is indeed a popular destination, particularly in July and August, so it can become busy. However, as part of a smaller group tour, our guides are skilled at planning visits to minimize time spent in crowded areas while focusing on the highlights that matter most. If you are looking for a quieter experience, we gently recommend visiting during the off-peak seasons.
Is there enough time to truly enjoy and explore Peles Castle, Bran Castle and Rasnov Fortress?
Yes, it certainly is! We have thoughtfully designed the tour to provide a fulfilling experience within a full-day. Our guides are dedicated to maximizing your time, focusing on the most interesting facts and stories, ensuring you walk away with a deep appreciation for both sites. You can expect to fully absorb the rich history without feeling rushed.
Where exactly is the meeting point? Can I be picked up from my hotel or dropped off at a different location?
The main meeting point is in front of Biblioteca Județeană "George Barițiu" at Bulevardul Eroilor 33-35. We completely understand that convenience matters; therefore, we offer complimentary pick-up from various locations within Brașov, including areas outside the old town. If you have a specific drop-off location in mind, we are happy to assist with that for a small additional fee. Just let us know 24 hours in advance, and we will make the necessary arrangements.
Will Bran Castle meet my expectations as Dracula's Castle? Will there be any Dracula-related artifacts or stories?
Bran Castle is indeed a place rich in history and legend, and we believe it will meet your expectations quite well. While there may not be explicit Dracula-related artifacts, our guide will share the fascinating connections between the castle, Bram Stoker's iconic novel, and Vlad the Impaler, the historical figure who inspired the legend. The castle’s Gothic architecture and mysterious ambiance are sure to spark your imagination.
What happens if the weather is bad? Is this tour still worth doing in winter or during cold months?
We understand that weather conditions can be a concern. However, we firmly believe that this tour is worthwhile in any season. Winter adds a unique charm to the scenery, with snow-covered landscapes enhancing the beauty of the castles. Our transportation is climate-controlled for your comfort, and our guides are experienced in adapting the itinerary to make your experience enjoyable, no matter the weather.
Is this tour only available in English? Are there guides who speak other languages?
Currently, we offer the tour in English year-round. However, we fully understand that language preferences vary. If you require a guide who speaks another language, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We will do our utmost to accommodate your request, depending on the availability of our guides.
Is €68 per person a good value for this tour? What makes it worth the price compared to other options?
We genuinely believe that this tour offers excellent value for the experience it provides. You will enjoy transportation in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle, the expertise of a licensed guide who brings history to life, and the benefits of a small group setting that ensures a personalized experience. This tour presents a stress-free opportunity to explore two iconic attractions, allowing you to create wonderful memories while saving time and effort compared to planning the trip on your own.
Will there be enough time to explore each location?
Absolutely, we understand how important it is to have enough time to truly enjoy each site. Our itinerary is thoughtfully crafted to provide you with ample opportunity to explore, balancing your time between travel and discovery. At Peles Castle, we want you to relish the beauty during a guided tour of its stunning interior. At Bran Castle, you'll have the chance to wander through its Gothic chambers and delve into its rich history and legends. Although Rasnov Fortress is partially closed, you'll still be able to admire its exterior and uncover its intriguing stories.
Is this tour suitable for seniors or families with young children?
Yes, definitely! We recognize that comfort is key, which is why this is a low-difficulty tour. While there is some walking and stairs involved at the various sites, we ensure the pace is manageable for all guests. If you have specific mobility concerns, please reach out to us—we're here to help and can provide additional support or guidance to make your experience enjoyable.
How much time will be spent driving versus sightseeing?
We understand that you want to make the most of your time, so while some driving is necessary to reach these fantastic sites, we prioritize maximizing your sightseeing experience. The scenic drive through the beautiful Romanian countryside is a delightful part of the journey, and our guides are eager to share engaging stories and historical insights along the way to enhance your experience.
What is the group size, and can I book a private tour?
We are committed to providing a personal and relaxed experience, which is why we specialize in small-group tours (maximum 8). If you're looking for a more intimate experience, we also offer private tours tailored to your group's needs. Just let us know what you're looking for, and we'll do our best to accommodate you!

Very good experience with very interesting guide
We loved our guide Tiberiu, who knows perfectly the history of Bran Castle and the Rasnov Fortress, the two activities we had booked. The extensive explanations covered also the history and the culture of Transylvania through centuries.Nicholas

Hands down the best guided tour!
I was hesitant about booking in the first place because I typically don’t like tours, Tiberius knows his stuff and practically gave me a college class on the castle/fortress. He was able to connect the dots throughout history and explain how and why the areas changed. Absolutely fascinating and I’d say it’s a must if you are in the area!Beau S

An absolute must!
I don't like guided tours and this is the first one I've ever been on, as I prefer exploring on my own. But if I knew they'd all be like this, and could have Charlie as my guide, I'd definitely change my opinion. This day was just so much fun from start to finish. Charlie had so much knowledge of the castles and their history and he made it really interesting and fun and he was just really cool to hang out with. The group was small and it felt like going on a day trip with friends. 10/10 would highly recommend.Irma Caraballo Álvarez

Great tour with Dan
On our tour, we went to Peleș, Pelișor and Bran castles as well as the Sinaia Monastery and Rasnov Fort. It was a full day to say the least. Dan, our amazing tour guide, made it all happen even when it wasn’t the original plan because we added more stops. He was very accommodating and made sure we got to Sinaia early to avoid the lines on the next destination at Peles Castle. We arrived at Peles Castle in perfect time before the crowds. Throughout the trip we would make stops of visita points for a quick break, which was nice to stretch and get some fresh air. Most importantly, Dan is very knowledgeable and we got a good sense of Romanian history. He uses photos, books, maps, and figurines to help convey and understand the rich history. You can tell that Dan loves what he does and his country, and wants people to love it as much. He is an approachable and friendly person to ask anything related to Romaina. Thank you for the excellent and unforgettable tour, Dan. We love Romania ?Dorin Pislaru

A very pleasant personal trip to Bran Castle and Rasnov Fortress
I was the only participant the 12 th of September and I had a great morning trip with driver and guide Karoly/Charlie. He is kind helpful knowledgeable and a good driver. We were because we were early before the crowds at Bran Castle which is great when you are a photographer. Besides the fortress Charlie stopped at a fortified church on the way and let a lady open the gate which was a very nice experience I can recommend these small tours with Active TravelPhilipp

Fascinating Bran Castle Tour
Tiberiu from Active Travels was our guide for our group at Bran Castle. A mixed group of Romanians and foreigners that knew little about the castle. He made the tour so interesting for all of us with the all the vast information he obviously had about Romanian history and Bran Castle. He spoke with such passion and admiration about Queen Maria and all that she did for her people and the castle that fascinated all the participants and they all shared great feedback on the tour.Ruohui & Oriol

Perfetto
Bobby & Chris
