ITINERARY: BRASOV - PREJMER - HARMAN - BRASOV

In the 12th century, the German Saxons arrived in Transylvania, playing a pivotal role in the region’s development by building powerful strongholds and fortresses that would shape the area’s history for centuries. Known as Sasi, these settlers profoundly impacted Transylvania’s economy, fostering a cultural evolution that left a lasting legacy. The influence of the Saxons can still be felt today in the medieval towns of Brașov, Sibiu, Sighișoara, Mediaș, and Sebeș. However, the most striking remnants of their presence are the remarkable fortified churches scattered throughout the region, each a testament to their ingenuity and resilience.

On this enriching day tour from Brașov, an English-speaking guide will take you to two of the most impressive Saxon Church Fortresses: Harman and Prejmer.

Prejmer Church, one of Eastern Europe’s best-preserved fortified churches and a UNESCO World Heritage site, stands as a remarkable example of Gothic architecture. Built in 1427, its design features the shape of a Latin cross, with towering walls that rise 14 meters high and are 5 meters thick, built to withstand the invasions of the Ottoman Empire. The fortress is accessible through a 5-meter-thick tunnel, further emphasizing the strength and defensive purpose of this medieval structure. The church's fortifications are a true marvel of military and architectural design.

Harman Church, a Roman basilica with distinct Gothic elements, is equally fascinating. Its sturdy west tower, chapels, and surrounding water moat have withstood the test of time, preserving the essence of the medieval era. Inside, you’ll find exquisite frescoes dating back to the 13th century, offering a glimpse into the rich artistic and cultural heritage of the Saxon settlers.

This tour provides an exceptional opportunity to explore the architectural and historical grandeur of the Saxon legacy in Transylvania, showcasing the strength, culture, and artistry that defined the region during the medieval period.
